James Alston, another LVBC student, is a success story despite dropping out of Philadelphia Schools at 14. Two years later he was working in the Dining Services Department of the Evergreens, a retirement facility on Moorestown and started working on his GED. However, with a fourth grade reading level, he was having difficulty. He came to LVBC and was assigned to Barbara Payton, a resident of Willingboro. Because he was working two jobs, it was arranged to meet at Evergreens during his work breaks. Alston commented, “To begin with I wanted to improve my reading to earn a GED, but eventually I also wanted to be able to help my children with their reading and school work.”
Moorestown resident Petra Bosanac and her family arrived in the U.S. from Croatia in 2001 with no knowledge of English. In 2004, she enrolled in the LVBC program “English for Speakers of Other Languages” and began working with LVBC Tutor and Medford resident Judy Mosconi. After two years in the program, she was able to converse well in English, as well as read and write. As a result of her efforts, she was promoted to supervisor where she works at the Lutheran Home in Moorestown. Petra has become a spokesperson for Literacy Volunteers.
